Green Sketching - Butser Hill / Friday 16th May 2025, 10-12pm

£35.00

Join me (Claire) for two hours up at Buster Hill to discover the joy of taking time to really notice our natural world. Learn how simple drawing activities can turn a walk in the countryside into a magical world of wonder, noticing and slowing down, benefitting our mental health and bringing calm to our busy lives.

Butser Hill is a very special site, full of wild flowers, birds and bugs, and of course incredible views. We will meet at the Roundhouse cafe near the carpark at the top of the hill and take a very gentle walk to explore the area - we won’t be climbing up the hill or walking very far, it will mostly be sitting, looking and doodling! There is a cafe and toilets right by our meeting point.

Through guided activities we will take a slow approach to noticing our natural environment, and use a pencil to enhance our observations. Taking the time to draw simple natural shapes or do some nature doodles gives our minds time to slow down, and focus on something immediate and simple.

This focus on the process of drawing (rather than the finished result) means that everyone, regardless of previous drawing experience, can benefit from the joy of Green Sketching. Absolute beginners very much encouraged… and don’t worry, we won’t be sharing or comparing our drawings!

All materials provided, participants just need drinks/snacks and appropriate footwear and clothing for being outside. There will be short stretches of walking as part of the workshop.

Workshops details -

We will meet near the cafe by the Butser Hill car park (it is the round building with a pointed roof that you could see a short walk up a slight incline from the carpark) at 10am. After a brief introduction, we will do some nature spotting and simple drawing activities in the vicinity, looking at both small details of flowers and leaves, as well as the view from the hill. The session will finish at 12pm.

All materials are provided as part of your fee. You will be given your own pocket sketchbook to use and take away with you, as well as a handy Green Sketching guide. All other materials will be for use in the workshop. Just bring yourself, a drink and any snacks you might want.

Please come prepared to be outdoors. Sturdy footwear is essential, and if it’s cold or wet, wear a coat and enough layers to stay warm while sitting down. If it’s sunny, please bring suncream and a hat. It is quite exposed at Butser Hill so do come prepared for either sun or wind! The workshop will be cancelled and full refund given if high winds or heavy rain is forecast.

There will be some walking on uneven surfaces (stones, roots, slight inclines) and either standing or sitting on logs/the ground for drawing. If you wish, you could bring a mat or small folding chair to sit on but this is not essential.

Participants must be over 18 years, or 14-17 years with an accompanying adult (you both need fully paid tickets). No dogs please.

There are toilets and refreshments at the cafe building.

When you book I will ask you to let me know of any mobility or health issues, and also an emergency name and contact number. Please make sure this is all accurate, just send me a quick email if there is anything else you need to tell me.

Please read the full terms and conditions - by booking this workshop, you are agreeing to these terms.

And just get in touch if you have any questions about accessibility, location or what to expect from the workshop!

Location -

This location is best accessed by car. There is a car park at the top of the hill called Butser Hill car park GU31 5SP (see image with map). Please note that there is a charge for parking as it is within the Queen Elizabeth Country Park. The cafe is just a few metres from the car park and this is where we will meet.
